Winston Churchill funeral commemoration in pictures
The man widely regarded as the UK's greatest Prime Minister was commemorated today by a series of events including a flotilla mirroring the route his funeral procession took 50 years ago.
The Havengore – the boat that took the coffin of Winston Churchill down the Thames on January 30, 1965 – this lunchtime retraced its path through Tower Bridge and past London's most iconic riverside buildings – many of which would not have existed when the original journey was made.

The procession was accompanied by various live music, including Scottish bagpipers.

The procession was given a four gun salute as it passed the HMS Belfast, before continuing towards Westminster Bridge, when a service took place at the Houses of Parliament. David Cameron gave a speech praising the wartime leader, who was famous as much for his legendary wit and ubiquitous cigars as he was his leadership skills.

After that a ceremonial wreath was cast into the Thames.

Churchill's grandson Randolph Churchill said: "I think he would be extremely surprised but thrilled that we are a country that thrives on its parliamentary democracy, where we have our freedoms and liberties, that we cherish them, and he would be thrilled that modern Britain has achieved so much in its own way."
