Could one of these designs be London’s newest bridge from Nine Elms to Pimlico?

This week, over 70 architects unveiled their concepts for London’s newest bridge between Vauxhall and Chelsea bridges. Over on the south bank, a £15bn regeneration scheme is underway in Nine Elms. Some of the UK’s biggest housebuilders are constructing thousands of new homes on the former industrial site, which includes Battersea Power Station and the New Covent Garden Market. The area is also soon to be home to the new Dutch Embassy, US Embassy and two new town centres. 

 

 

To finish the job off, Wandsworth Council has invited some of the world’s most prestigious design firms and some up-and-coming talents to submit ideas for a new pedestrian and cycle bridge from Nine Elms to Pimlico. All of the first stage designs will then be showcased locally and published online so Londoners can pick their favourites and leave comments for the panel of judges.

 

 

The entries are currently anonymous, so all architects big and small can compete on an even playing field. Once the winner is selected, the bridge will go through the planning process. 

 

 

“To succeed this bridge must be two things at once,” says Cllr Ravi Govindia, jury member and leader of Wandsworth Council. “It must be a beautiful piece of architecture and a valuable new transport link. This is what our growing city needs and thanks to this competition, we now have more than 70 different approaches to consider.”
