Women’s teams ready for action in new football computer game

EA SPORTS, the maker of the popular Fifa series of football computer games, has announced that the latest version, to be released this September, will feature women’s teams for the first time.
The game will allow players to take part in matches operating as 12 of the top national women’s sides, including England, Germany, Brazil and the USA.
“Bringing some of the best women’s players and teams in the world to our franchise is a massive event for EA Sports, and we are equally excited about bringing millions of fans a new way to play,” said David Rutter, the general manager and vice president responsible for Fifa at EA Sports.
The announcement comes just days before the women’s world cup kicks off on 5 June in Canada. Their inclusion in Fifa 16 marks a significant step forward for women’s football, which is becoming more and more popular.
Increasing numbers of women are playing video games. Some 52 per cent of game players in the UK and 48 per cent in the US are women, surveys conducted in 2014 showed.
Currently embattled Fifa president Sepp Blatter infamously remarked that female footballers should wear tighter shorts in order to boost the game’s popularity.
