Vodafone has won a £75m contract with Scottish Power Energy Networks
Vodafone has won a £75m contract with Scottish Power Energy Networks to help the utility firm monitor its network delivering electricity to over 3.5m UK homes and businesses.
The four-year contract announced today will require Vodafone to run performance monitoring and fault identification systems for over 110,000 kilometres of Scottish Power’s lines and cables.
The telco giant will install data monitoring systems across locations in central and southern Scotland, Merseyside and North Wales, which Scottish Power will use to improve the efficiency and reliability of their current infrastructure.
Vodafone has also been tasked with improving the integration of energy generated from renewable sources, like solar and wind power.
Jan Geldmacher, Vodafone’s global enterprise chief executive, said:
A world-class power distribution network relies on world-class digital communications to function effectively. We welcome the opportunity to work with ScottishPower in support of the company’s plans to meet the long-term needs of its customers.
Scottish Power’s chief exec Frank Mitchell said that the contract would “enhance our network operations” and ultimately benefit customers.
The firm is investing over £6bn between now and 2024 in infrastructure upgrades.
Scottish Power currently holds the unflattering title of "most complained about UK energy supplier", with customer complaints rocketing by 588 per cent in 2014 and Ofgem slapping a temporary selling ban on the firm for bad customer service.
