Top bosses going back to school
SOME OF the City’s most formidable bosses have signed up to offer careers advice in state schools across the country this week, joining the Eton-educated PM David Cameron, Westminster School’s Nick Clegg and shadow home secretary Yvette Cooper in extolling to schoolkids the virtues of hard work over family ties.
Carphone Warehouse chief exec Charles Dunstone, Newton leader Helena Morrissey and ex-Pearson boss Marjorie Scardino are among the captains of industry taking part in Speakers for Schools Week.
Andrew Law, Caxton Associates boss and chair of Speakers for Schools, said the talks are intended to “motivat[e] the next generation of British success stories”.
In what is perhaps a reflection of the City’s general population, only a handful of the speakers from the financial industry actually went to comprehensive schools – a feature of the business world that the Speakers for Schools charity, founded by the BBC’s Robert Peston, aims to change.
