Pickles paves the way for mid height housing blocks in London
COMMUNITIES secretary Eric Pickles has announced plans that could see more mid-rise housing blocks built in central London, to tackle overcrowding in the capital.
Announcing a new £50m fund to unlock stalled development across the country, Pickles said some of the money would be directed towards regenerating London’s tired housing estates.
“Past experience tells us that mere tinkering won’t work. We need to be more ambitious,” Pickles told the Evening Standard newspaper yesterday.
The money announced yesterday will be added to a £1bn pot announced by George Osborne in the Budget earlier this year. The money will be spent on boosting affordable housing schemes.
In the capital, the money will be put into central London locations, which research by Savills suggest have been neglected for years.
