Libya declared liberated
JUBILANT Libyans celebrated yesterday as politicians declared the country “liberated” after 42 years of rule by Colonel Muammar Gaddafi.
At a huge rally in Benghazi, where the uprising began eight months ago,
Abdel Hafiz Ghoga, the National Transitional Council’s vice chairman said: “Declaration of Liberation. Raise your head high. You are a free Libyan.”
Meanwhile defence secretary Philip Hammond said yesterday the new Libyan government’s reputation has been “a little bit stained” by the killing of Gaddafi.
“It’s certainly not the way we do things,” he said in a television interview. “We would have liked to see Col Gaddafi going on trial to answer for his misdeeds.”
Hammond said court proceedings would have held the dictator to account and an investigation should be held into his death.
