Baffling economics
[Re: Economics baffles half the population, Monday]
So 48 per cent of UK adults say they understand how the economy works. This seems high, given the management of the economy in the run-up to the Great Recession. Surely, the Treasury and the FSA would have done a better job if even 48 per cent of the top people understood what they were doing.
Richard Peirson
The Social Economy Alliance wants people to be taught about economics so they understand where their tax money is spent. Far better to let people keep it for themselves, surely?

Ukraine crisis
[Re: UK suspends military cooperation with Russia after Putin signs Crimea treaty, yesterday]
Poor Russia must be shaking in its boots every time William Hague squeaks and draws attention to his own irrelevance. He could argue for restrictions on Russian money in the City, but only if he really wanted to lose his job. Crimea is a fait accompli. It’s voted overwhelmingly for a union with Russia and no one can reverse it. Just as the US won’t allow missiles to be based in Cuba, Russia is not going to allow Ukraine to threaten its security. How about we have another vote on Syria to remind us all of this government’s complete incompetence?

What’s the point of Budget day if the proposals are all announced, then critiqued and analysed, in advance?
@WoodClaudia
Referendum choice is clear. More powers for Scottish parliament, back-up of UK, or losing pound and jobs.
@TogetherDarling
EU sanctions on exports of machinery, chemicals, rubber on which Russia is reliant could be effective.

No matter what Russians do, can’t have a New Cold War if China’s not playing. And Chinese refuse to play.
