Jeremy Corbyn’s claims of support from Bernie Sanders have been rubbished by the Vermont senator
Jeremy Corbyn is facing fresh embarrassment after Vermont senator Bernie Sanders rubbished the Labour leader's claims of sending a message of support.
Speaking at a campaign event on Monday evening in East London, Corbyn claimed Sanders had contacted his team over the weekend.
However, Sanders' camp have denied that there had been any message transmitted from the senator.
A spokesman for Senator Sanders told City A.M.: “The senator didn't send a message and doesn't intend to get involved in British politics but has a lot of respect for Mr. Corbyn and wishes him well.”
In remarks reported by the Press Association, Corbyn told volunteers at a phonebank in Walthamstow on Monday: “We had a message yesterday from Bernie Sanders, saying that they condemned him because he wasn’t electable.
“And he said the reason they condemned him was because he was electable. And he represented a threat to the establishment within the USA.
Corbyn added: “So I think you can see the parallels that are going on there.”
A spokesperson for the Corbyn campaign said: “Jeremy was misinformed by an aide, who had wrongly been led to believe this was the case.”

It comes after Corbyn has been embroiled in a row over a video he recorded on a Virgin Train last week, in which he and other passengers were sitting on the floor on a “ram-packed” service.
After Virgin responded with CCTV images suggesting otherwise, Corbyn was forced to clarify that he had been unable to find seats for he and his wife to sit together.
However, he admitted that Virgin staff had later found space for the Labour leader and his team for more than half of the journey.
