Culture secretary Maria Miller resigns
The culture secretary Maria Miller has resigned amid growing pressure over her expenses claims.
In a letter to the Prime Minister, Miller said the ongoing dispute had "become a distraction from the vital work this government is doing."
The Prime Minister responded to the letter saying he was "sorry" to have received it, but nevertheless accepted her decision.
Miller's resignation comes six days after she gave a turse 32 second apology in the House of Commons for her response to an inquiry of expenses claimed for her second home.
The former culture secretary was found not to have used taxpayers' money to fund a home for parents, but was instructed to repay £5,800 of incorrectly claimed expenses by the Standards Committee.
This fell well below the recommendation of the commissioner for parliamentary standards, who said Miller should have repayed £45,000 in expenses claimed on the Wimbledon house.
