63 chances to join mile-high club in style

YOU WOULD have thought it was an exclusive club with strictly limited chances to join, but, in fact, Britain is awash with private jets for sale.
One-in-six UK jet owners are bored with their lives of luxury and are selling up.
There are 63 on the market in Britain right now, according aviation management and charter firm Hanger8.
That is 16.5 per cent of the fleet in Britain, and means the UK is far and away the biggest market – next in line are Switzerland, Austria and France, tied in second place with 33 on sale in each country.
Italy has the highest proportion of its fleet for sale, with 22 planes for sale – 16.7 per cent of the country’s total.
With all this competition between sellers, the latest ruse among private jet peddlers is the spruce it up with a new colour.
“Owners need to find ways of making their aircraft more attractive,” said Hanger8’s boss Dustin Dryden.
“The cost of a re-spray can be around one per cent of the value of an aircraft, but it could increase its value by up to 10 per cent.”
The Capitalist is rather tempted, after a delightful experience this summer.
A recent holiday flight to the Med was pretty empty, so yours truly had a little taste of the luxury that comes with private flying – no queues, plenty of space to spread out and no crying infants.
The journey even came with a processed turkey sandwich (at breakfast time), so if that is anything to go by it is well worth snapping up a plane of one’s own.
■ Becoming a banker is hardly the coolest choice a student can make right now – left-wing campuses are not exactly the place to reveal your burning desire to enter a 40-year career in the heart of the capitalist system. But if it isn’t trendy, at least it is getting easier – finance uni Ifs University College is launching a careers website dedicated to the sector. Myfinancialcareer.co.uk is targetting pupils and students aged between 14 and 21, so they can plan their GCSEs, A-levels and degrees around their future careers. “From our work providing financial capability qualifications to schools across the country it became clear, that while many students are very interested in learning about potential career paths in the financial services industry, more resources were required in this area,” said Ifs. Alison Pask.
■ Imagine being dumped for unethical shopping. How embarrassing. What would you tell your mother? And could you come up with a good excuse for your mates? But it seems fussy partners are becoming more common – 18 per cent of us would refuse to become romantically involved with someone who regularly buys from socially irresponsible firms, according to a study by Social Enterprise UK and the Cabinet Office. The pair claim there are 180,000 social enterprises in the UK, which give money to charity or other good causes rather than working for a profit. They hope that by highlighting your other half’s potential dislike of unethical shopping you might be encouraged to take part in Social Saturday, this weekend’s celebration of companies which work for the good of society or the environment.
