Britain reach final eight
TEAM GB’s women’s football team last night advanced to a quarter-final against Canada after defeating Brazil 1-0 to secure first place in Group E.
A third goal in three games from Steph Houghton proved enough for victory in front of a 70,584 crowd and though Kelly Smith’s penalty was saved, Britain successfully contained Brazil to maintain their record of winning every fixture since the start of the Games.
Houghton’s goal came as early as the second minute when collecting Karen Carney’s pass and producing a precise finish to give Britain the lead before a period in which both sides would fail to settle.
Brazil thereafter remained a threat throughout with the decorated Marta a particular danger, but Britain closed out for victory.
