Volkswagen passenger car sales fell 8.8 per cent in Germany in January, while in the US sales slumped 15 per cent compared on last year.
Overall car sales in Germany, Europe's largest car market, were up 3.3 per cent from a year earlier.
VW is still recovering from an emissions cheating scandal that was uncovered in the US by regulators last year and has spread around the world.
VW car sales in Germany fell to 47,147 in the month of January, while overall German car registrations rose to 218,365.
In the US VW’s sales, including brands include VW, Audi and Porsche, came in at 20,078 in January.
Meanwhile, VW said today it has begun to remove the emissions cheating devices installed in some European cars.
In the US only Chrysler, up 6.9 per cent, and Nissan, up 1.6 per cent, managed to pull in a rise in sales.
Other brands claimed to have been impacted by adverse weather conditions.
