Tory lead narrows in poll
THE chances of a hung Parliament looked that much greater yesterday, after a poll from YouGov put Labour just nine points behind the Conservatives, who registered 40 per cent support.
The City is concerned that a narrow majority for an incoming government, or even worse, no majority at all, will make it impossible to take decisive action to reduce the country’s fiscal deficit.
Labour is generally thought to have benefited politically from the introduction of the banker bonus tax last week, even though it has provoked fury in the City of London.
There was some good news for the Conservatives, though, with a second poll (ComRes) giving the Tories a massive 17 per cent lead.
There were reports yesterday suggesting the government is preparing itself for a snap election, maybe as early as 25 March.
