Thomas Cook wins big at the PwC Plc Awards
THE GONGS were flying at the Grosvenor House Hotel last night for the PwC Plc Awards. Host Mishal Husain (of BBC fame) told the crowd how organiser Ian Restall likes to keep a tight ship and sure enough it was all over by 10pm with award-giving kept to an unusually neat 35 minutes.
The Lazarus of the travel world Thomas Cook surprised no one by bagging two awards, the Turnaround of the Year and also Achievement in Sustainability with chief executive Harriet Green accepting both with a wide grin. Supergroup’s longhaired boss Julian Dunkerton took entrepreneur of the year and The Capitalist caught up with him on his way outside for a cigarette. “It’s been a great night,” he said. “I can’t seem to stop lately there’s been so many opportunities – I don’t think I’ve ever been this happy…(not just because of the award of course),” he added with a laugh. Comedian Andy Parsons wrapped up proceedings and got a roomful of hearty laughs. Hats off, he even made the room smile about tax. No doubt he’ll have a busy awards season this year.
