Sporting stars eye up future jobs in the City
CAPTAIN of Leicestershire County Cricket Club and former England player Matthew Hoggard recently did his best to bowl over Global Payments’ London office, as part of a work placement initiative to help cricketers gain business skills.
The project is a joint effort between the Professional Cricketers’ Association and English Cricket Board, which helps to prepare sports professionals for life off the pitch.
Hoggard seemed enthusiastic about a mid-thirties career change, telling The Capitalist: “If Freddie Flintoff can step into a boxing ring, then I could be a salesman.”
Cricketers aren’t the only ones making a transition from sport to the City. Who can forgot our most shining example of an athlete who is now a top dog over in Canary Wharf? Former Olympic medallist Lord Sebastian Coe went from track hero to chairman of Locog, with an added detour into politics along the way.
When The Capitalist cornered former England rugby captain Martin Corry at a recent liquid lunch in the City, he revealed he had been given the position of business development manager at Oracle. Unclear on what that job entails? Yep, so was he.
