Protesters in court appeals
THE CITY of London Corporation will press ahead with a High Court bid to remove protesters from outside St Paul’s today despite suggestions last night that Occupy LSX had offered to move on.
City A.M. understands the corporation wants a judge to decide the fate of the Occupy camp, which was set up more than two months ago, because previous talks with the activists have proved inconclusive. The corporation, which declined to comment, has no plans to abandon the hearing in the Queen’s Bench Division despite suggestions last night that the activists could scale down their camp outside the churchyard and establish a “symbolic” presence inside the cathedral.
City officials still have serious concerns about the obstruction caused to the highway and have not received a concrete proposal from the protesters’ lawyers.
The cathedral dropped out of an earlier eviction attempt amid splits which ultimately prompted the resignation of three clerics, including Rev Canon Dr Giles Fraser, the chancellor.
Members of the “Bank of Ideas”, who are occupying a disused UBS building by Liverpool Street station, will appear in the High Court today for permission to appeal an injunction and request a stay of execution.
