Property sector veteran bows out on high note
Salway’s eight-year tenure at the helm of the UK’s largest property company may have been a long one but his journey to the top was swift.
In 2000, Salway quit his job as investment director at Standard Life to join Land Securities, as head of asset management. Four years later and several roles in between, he took over from Ian Henderson as chief executive.
Salway, 54, said he never want to stay until normal retirement age. “I wanted something else,” he said.
It is understandable for the chief who has led the group through a rollercoaster ride of boom and bust. Salway came under fire in 2008 when the firm posted a £4.8bn loss, but the City agrees he is leaving the firm in good shape.
