PROFILE: JONATHAN SORRELL
AS yet it is unclear whether a 34-year old who enjoyed the best of the City’s booming noughties is best placed to help dig out Man Group from a large-scale crisis.
But Jonathan Sorrell certainly has pedigree.
Son of Sir Martin, the head of advertising group WPP, he studied law at Cambridge, from 1995 to 1998.
After graduating, Sorrell joined the ranks of Goldman Sachs, where he rose rapidly over the following 13 years.
As well as leading investments in hedge fund firms, he also worked in Goldman’s securities and investment banking divisions.
Arguably Sorrell’s highlight at Goldman was his engineering of a number of high-profile investments for the bank’s Petershill fund, a private equity-style vehicle aimed at alternative fund managers that was sold to top Goldman clients.
Sorrell then joined Man last August as head of strategy and corporate finance. Since joining, he has played a key role in the proposed acquisition of London-based investment firm FRM.
