Posties to deliver a strike by next week
POSTAL strikes will hit the UK next week, after a last-ditch ultimatum from the Communications Workers Union (CWU) failed to get backing from Royal Mail.
CWU issued an eleventh hour “peace deal” to Royal Mail over modernisation at the company, threatening to strike as early as next week if demands on pay and working conditions were not met. But Royal Mail hit out at the union, saying its threat of industrial action was a “blatant and deplorable attack on customers and on the future of the postal services”.
And business secretary Lord Mandelson said the industrial action “defied logic” and would be “suicidal” for Royal Mail. Two or three days of national strikes could cost Royal Mail around £120m, it is estimated.
