Nuclear Management Partners could lose Sellafields contract
OFFICIALS are expected to make a statement today regarding the contract to clean up Sellafield – the largest nuclear waste site in western Europe.
Sellafield is currently managed by consortium Nuclear Management Partners (NMP) which has had the contract for the last six years. The contract was extended by five years in 2013.
It is understood that the Nuclear Decommissioning (NDA) Authority has made a recommendation to the Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC) advising on whether NMP should stay in charge.
“The NDA has been working with government and industry experts on alternative options at Sellafield. This will deliver more effective progress in decommissioning the biggest and most complex nuclear site in Europe and provide the best outcome for the public,” a DECC spokesperson said.
NMP general manager Iain Irving defended the consortium’s record saying that since the 2013 contract extension “the site has enjoyed one of its best ever periods of performance and progress.”
