McAlpine wins Heron job
DEVELOPERS Heron International yesterday appointed Sir Robert McAlpine as the main contractor on the Heron, its residential development in the City of London.
McAlpine has beaten rival construction firms to the deal to build the 36-storey tower next to the Barbican. Work is set to begin next week and conclude in 2013.
Heron’s commercial director Lisa Ronson said: “We look forward to working with Sir Robert McAlpine to bring this exclusive development to life, ensuring that the quality of the build and finish is as exceptional as the building’s unique location.”
The tower will contain 284 apartments, of which 30 per cent are already sold, and the lower floors will house the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
The appointment comes days after Heron secured its first tenants in the Heron Tower near Liverpool Street, the tallest building in the City.
McDermott signed up for around 25,000 sq ft of office space over two floors, with the option to take a further floor higher in the building.
