Car production soars by 44pc
CAR production in Britain jumped by 44 per cent in April compared with the same month last year.
A total of 98,290 cars were made in the month as the industry emerged from recession.
Commercial vehicle production also rose – increasing 40.8 per cent to 10,777, according to the society of motoring Manufacturers and Traders.
Car production for the year so far is 64.9 per cent up on the total for January to April last year.
Engine jumped by 38.2 per cent in April and is 41 per cent higher over the first four months.
Home market leapt a huge 150.5 per cent last month.
SMMT chief executive Paul Everitt said: “A number of UK product launches and the introduction of new technologies are helping to sustain demand despite an expected slowdown following the end of the scrappage scheme.
“The home market saw a significant increase in the month, a positive indication of a strengthening economy and an improvement in consumer confidence.”
