Beyond your 9-5: things to explore in the Square Mile

For most, the City of London is defined by the rhythm of the working week. Offices fill from Monday to Friday, and the streets fall quiet at the weekend.
But since the pandemic that pace has changed, and incredibly the Square Mile offers so much beyond the traditional 9-5.
A weekend in the City of London
Indeed, average Saturday visitor numbers reached 220,000 in the first half of 2026, up 19 per cent from 2023. The reason is simple: the City is becoming one of London’s most vibrant weekend destinations. From specialty coffee and rooftop cocktails to riverside experiences, signature events and galleries, unique shopping and destination dining, there are more reasons than ever to explore the Square Mile beyond your traditional weekday commute.
At the heart of this change is a simple shift: people are coming to the City not just because they have to, but because they want to – more people are choosing to spend their weekends in the City. As demand grows, businesses are adapting their offer to meet it.
Few places illustrate this shift better than the Royal Exchange – at the heart of Bank Junction. Visit the Royal Exchange
One of the City’s most iconic destinations, the Royal Exchange, has adapted to growing weekend demand through extended opening hours and an enhanced food and drink offer. An area once primarily associated with the working week – and the Bank of England – is increasingly attracting visitors to shop, dine and engage surrounded by some of London’s most iconic landmarks..
And it’s not the only area seeing the change.
Across the Square Mile, businesses are extending opening hours, investing in outdoor spaces and curating new experiences to showcase the uniqueness of one London’s historical city core. The numbers suggest this is more than a passing trend. Saturday footfall is now consistently higher than in previous years, with visitor numbers up 14 per cent compared to 2024 and five per cent compared to 2025. The trend shows that businesses and attractions are creating visitor economy that is growing rather than simply recovering.
What makes the City special is just how much there is to discover in such a small, easily accessible area.
And summer is the perfect time to explore everything the Square Mile has to offer. Catch a film under the city lights at the Barbican’s Outdoor Cinema, step inside the free exhibitions at the Guildhall Art Gallery and Roman Amphitheatre, join a guided walking tour or listen to a guided tour uncovering the City’s hidden alleyways, churches and millenia of history. Catch a live gig,
shop for antiques and vintage furniture, or explore London’s written history at Dr Johnson’s House. For those who need a break, there are more than 180 green spaces to wind down in. With a combination of heritage, culture, hospitality and public spaces there’s so much more to explore in the City beyond tall buildings and office space – although our free viewing platforms are a pretty cool way to change your perspective and discover the City’s innovative built environment.
The Square Mile as a destination
The evolution of the Square Mile sits as part of Destination City, the City of London Corporation’s growth strategy – which recognizes that our attractiveness as a business destination is strongly linked to our vibrancy and dynamism beyond traditional working hours. Crucially, it is a collective effort alongside businesses, Business Improvement Districts, cultural and creative institutions, the hospitality sector, and the wider City community working together to create a City that is inclusive and welcoming, reflective of the diverse talent that works in this global business hub.
For anyone looking to see that transformation for themselves, Summer in the City shines a spotlight on the breadth of food, drink, culture and experiences now on offer across the Square Mile. From panoramic views at Horizon 22 and the Garden at 120 to vintage flea markets at Leadenhall, award winning dining and hidden gems waiting to be discovered in its winding streets, the campaign showcases the businesses helping to drive the City’s growing weekend economy.
The City’s future will always be rooted in its role as a global centre for business. But increasingly it is becoming somewhere people choose to spend their time when the working day – and week – is over. Come and explore it yourself!
