And a little closer to home…
IF MIAMI sounds a little too far away, you can get a slice of the W party atmosphere without the jet lag at the Leicester Square hotel. It recently launched three screening suites, which, at the touch of a button, transform your room into a private cinema.
The bedroom is pretty swish to start with, with white drapes covering the walls, giving it an exotic, boudoir feel. By the bed is a rudimentary tablet, through which everything including the blinds, lights and TV is controlled. When you press the “cinema” button, the lights dim and a giant screen drops from behind a hidden alcove. It’s huge, and the soundsystem is loud enough that you start to worry about the neighbours. And the best bit: there is a sub-woofer mounted inside the bed, which rumbles whenever the bass kicks in. I watched Pacific Rim and every explosion and crunch of metal had a satisfying heft to it. The only drawback is the rather fiddly tablet, which often fails to recognise what you’re trying to press.
Until recently the rooms were branded “spa suites”, and they still have a private steam room and an obscenely deep bath, for when you’re finished watching movies.
And as of this month, you can also take advantage of the hotel’s vinyl service. DJ Annie Mac has chosen 200 albums, which you can have delivered to your room, along with a record player.
