Tragedy on Bank Street
JP Morgan employee who fell to his death from Canary Wharf office is named
A JP MORGAN employee who died after falling from the London headquarters of the bank has been named as Gabriel Magee.
Magee, a vice-president in technology, landed on the ninth floor of the 33-storey building at around 8am yesterday during the morning rush-hour. His death is not being treated as suspicious by police.
The 39-year-old was known to friends as Gabe and joined the bank in 2004, having previously worked for Intel. He was promoted to his current role in 2010. A JP Morgan spokesperson said: “We are deeply saddened to have lost a member of the JP Morgan family at 25 Bank Street. Our thoughts and sympathy are with his family and his friends.”
Workers at the bank described a sombre atmosphere yesterday. A close friend and colleague spoke of his disbelief. “We worked in a very performance oriented, pressure driven environment,” he said.
“Gabe was one of the rare people that you could both depend on for his contribution, and be grateful to have as a teammate because he made you forget the distinction between co-worker and friend. We are getting together this evening in his honour. Frankly none of us can make any sense of this terrible loss.”
Workers in neighbouring buildings took to Twitter yesterday following the incident. Andrew Lawrence wrote: “Sad scene. Someone jumped/fell at JP Morgan Canary Wharf. A sorry view from my desk. Police everywhere, but nobody approaching the body, odd.” Amie Hughes-Gage said: “Just watched the police finally remove that poor bankers body four and half hours later with only a white sheet over him.”
