Top 40 young hedge fund stars named
ROBERT Sorrell, the son of WPP chief executive Sir Martin Sorrell, has been named as one of the brightest people aged under 40 working in the hedge fund industry.
The first Financial News 40 under 40 Rising Stars of Hedge Funds rollcall applauds the talents of men and women from all corners of the hedge fund industry – from money managers, marketers, fundraisers and investors, to consultants, researchers, prime brokers and even a lawyer.
The Financial News list, which was whittled down from a longer list of 100, was drawn up by a panel of four over three months.
“Their roles vary, but the 40 names on the list all have in common fierce determination, dedication, dynamism and, of course, youth,” said the panel.
The criteria for the award was achievement to date given their age, the stature of their mentors, firepower at their disposal and their potential to reach a position of great influence.
Financial News said: “The list reflects the industry’s shift towards lobbying regulators and preparing for rule changes, including the winding down of banks’ proprietary trading businesses to comply with the Volcker rule.
“There is an increasing investor demand to tap into growth economies in emerging markets, as evidenced by the two Africa specialists and two emerging market fund managers listed here.
“Just as the focus of investing and regulation has shifted, the prime brokerage business has undergone a sea change, with competition fiercer than ever.
As if their work-related achievements are not enough to aspire to, the group also possess plenty of talent outside the boardroom.
Financial News warns the dynamos on its list are not just one-dimensional workaholics, adding: “There are competitive athletes, a best-selling novelist and collectors of the eclectic, to name but a few.”
