Sir Bobby Charlton chats to insurers at Lloyd’s of London
FORMER England and Manchester United footballer Sir Bobby Charlton was spotted in the City this week.
The football legend was at the Lloyd’s of London building to announce the launch of a £1m research fund for global landmine charity Find a Better Way.
Charlton set up the charity after a visit to Cambodia, with the goal of developing new technology which can speed up the detection and removal of landmines.
Sir Bobby thanked the gathered risk management industry for joining together to give their support and apologised for speaking so passionately about the issue. He told the insurers: “I am a humble footballer but the academics and the researchers can help to develop tools to combat this.”
Watch out for a disaster at commodities trading company Trafigura. Andrew Gowers (pictured), who is currently director of external relations at the Association for Financial Markets in Europe, has been appointed as head of corporate affairs at the trading firm. The former Financial Times editor has been a public relations man at Lehman Brothers, which as we all know subsequently went bust, and was also a spinner for BP at the time of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Let’s hope it is a case of third time lucky in Gowers’ corporate PR career.
Hedge fund tycoon Pierre Lagrange has made his latest savvy investment: a 160-year-old tailor famous for its tweeds and blue-blooded clientele. Lagrange, who co-founded GLG Partners, and his boyfriend Roubi L’Roubi have bought Savile Row stalwart Huntsman. L’Roubi, a womenswear and costume designer, will become creative director at the firm. Huntsman said L’Roubi is well-placed to honour the firm’s esteemed country roots, as he is an “accomplished dressage rider and keen shot”.
