Rolls-Royce plays down fears over Airbus as finally speaks
ROLLS-Royce said yesterday it had made progress in discovering the fault that caused one of its engines to fail on a Qantas flight from Singapore to Sydney last week, saying that the failure was specific to its Trent 900 engine.
Rolls added a separate incident at its test centre in Derby during August which saw its Trent 1000 engine explode was unconnected. The company’s first statement since last week when a Qantas A380 superjumbo was forced to make an emergency landing in Singapore saw the shares bounce, closing 2.4 per cent higher at 605p.
Earlier yesterday Qantas’ chief executive, Alan Joyce, said the airline’s own investigation had discovered oil leaks on three of the Trent 900 engines among its fleet of six Airbus A380s, which have been grounded since last week.
A source close to Rolls said the firm had brought together experts from around the world to try to understand what had caused the incident.
“The focus has been to understand the cause and the appropriate actions to take and the company has been getting on with that by working with its customers and the authorities,” the source added.
