Retailers exceed green promises
Firms are cutting waste at a faster rate than expected, and making business savings as a result, a report from the British Retail Consortium (BRC) argues today. Retailers had aimed to send less than 15 per cent of waste to landfill by 2013, but sent only 14 per cent in 2011 – well ahead of schedule. Similarly, they beat the target of cutting transport emissions by 15 per cent compared to 2005 emissions by 2013, and managed a 23 per cent reduction last year. Such efficiency gains are good for businesses, the BRC said, claiming that sustainable business practices will help firms stay competitive.
