Rail fare hike: How much your 2019 commute will cost
Train tickets are set grow even more expensive next year, with fares rising an average of 3.1 per cent in January.
The price hike – following a year of frustration for London commuters – has been much criticised, especially as it is tied to the more expensive Retail Price Index, rather than the more commonly used Consumer Price Index (CPI).
It also comes after a series of train strikes and service disruption affecting lines running into and out of major stations like Waterloo, as well as new timetables leading to weeks of cancellations and delays in May.
Nevertheless, while pressure mounts on the government from all sides to consider options like re-nationalising the railway or tying future price increases to the CPI, commuters must dig into their pockets again next year.
