Nokia launches new Android series in Barcelona
Nokia has launched its first generation of Android smartphones at the World Mobile Congress in Barcelona.
The X, X+ and XL models will go on sale for between £74 and £90 and are part of Nokia's strategy to reassert itself in emerging markets.
“The sub-$100 price range is a massive opportunity for us,” said Nokia’s CEO Stephen Elop
The switch from Windows to the Android operating system had been widely anticipated.
"Now, with the introduction of the Nokia X family of devices, we're delivering the same design, quality and innovation Nokia is known to lower price points to capture the fastest-growing segment of the smartphone market" said Bryan Biniak, vice president and general manager, developer experience at Nokia.
The X model, which is to go on sale immediately in Europe and the Pacific, features a 4in display with a three-mega pixel camera and 512MB RAM. Users of the Nokia X platform will be able to make use of Microsoft's cloud storage system, One Drive.
The XL model boasts a 5in screen with a five megapixel rear camera and a front-facing two megapixel camera.
The intermediate X+ will have a 4GB MicroSD card as well as 768MB RAM and will go sale with the XL in April.
