News Corp cash in spotlight
CASH payments totalling six figures are suspected to have reached the pockets of public officials, in light of evidence which suggests ten of thousands of pounds were spent each year by News Corp journalists in the UK to keep police officers and other civil servants on retainers.
“This is not about sources or expenses,” a source close to the matter said. “This is an investigation into serious suspected criminality over a sustained period.”
Rupert Murdoch, who is expected to land in London today, will face unhappy staff at The Sun, where nine journalist have been arrested in the last few weeks.
Meanwhile, News Corp’s former private detective Glenn Mulcaire, who was jailed for several months in 2007, won permission yesterday to appeal to the Supreme Court against an order to disclose who instructed him to hack into voicemails.
