Mipim 2015: This year it’s not just about London
Today is the day to see most of the British contingent arrive in Cannes for Mipim, Europe's biggest property get-together.
It is a packed schedule and where better to start than the London marquee, right on the waterfront. Dominated by a huge model of our city, each borrower and district showcases their investment opportunities. It is a powerful message to attendees from all over the world.
At lunch I attended an event hosted by London Chamber of Commerce and Industry where Tony Pidgeley, chairman of Berkeley Group, rightly observed that the British do not celebrate our successes enough and London is one of the best examples.
Manchester is also making a lot of noise, with an impressive strategy for regeneration. It is healthy to give investors options in the UK as London is getting expensive for some.
This event showcases some amazing Innovation which could be transformational for all buildings and places. A powerful and resounding message at Mipim this year is of resilience and technology – how cities need to perform to stay ahead of the game. Pavegen founder Laurence Kemball-Cook demonstrated how kinetic energy from footsteps on specially designed tiles can generate power for buildings. Expect to see these in a shopping centre near you soon.
Last night was the official Mipim opening party and the beginning of countless drinks events that kick the event off in its usual style. And that’s day one. Watch this space for what day two has to hold.
