Minimum new drink prices to curb bingeing
BRITISH supermarkets will be banned from selling alcohol below a national minimum price, under government plans to crack down on binge-drinking.
The new rules, announced yesterday, would prohibit shops from selling alcohol as a “loss leader” to entice customers.
But health groups say the suggested minimums – £2 for a bottle of wine, £10.50 for a litre of spirits and £9.20 for 20 beers – are set too low.
Home Secretary Theresa May will unveil the plans in a new Police and Social Responsibility Bill.
