Mace wins £400m contract to develop BBC Television Centre
CONSTRUCTION firm Mace has been picked as the preferred building manager for the redevelopment of the BBC Television Centre in West London, development company Stanhope said yesterday.
The contract, which is understood to be worth around £400m, is a major coup for the company after losing out to Swedish rival Skanska last week on a £600m deal to redevelop Battersea Power Station.
The 53-year-old centre, which closed its doors last year, was sold in 2012 to Stanhope and its Japanese and Canadian backers for £200m.
Stanhope plans to open the landmark building in White City to the public for the first time under its new guise as a site with offices and studio space for the BBC, a hotel, a gym and 950 homes.
The BBC will remain at Television Centre through its commercial subsidiaries BBC Studios and Post Production and BBC Worldwide.
Work is due to start in April next year, when the BBC will vacate the majority of the site.
Stanhope boss David Camp said: “We are delighted that Mace has been selected as the preferred construction manager for the delivery of Television Centre, we now intend to progress with enabling works to allow key elements of the first phase of Television Centre to be occupied in 2017.”
