iPhone charger recall issued due to “safety risk”
Apple has issued a recall of European iPhone chargers over fears that it could overheat posing a safety risk.
37 countries where the 5W European USB power adapter was sold with iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S models between October 2009 and September 2012 are affected.
UK models of the 5W USB power adapter are not affected, but the model was shipped in the majority of Apple’s European markets.
In a statement issued today Apple said it had identified the risk in a rare number of cases.
Customers with a charger labeled Model A1300 and the letters “CE” in solid gray have been advised to discontinue use and return them to Apple stores for a replacement.
Apple said in the statement “Customer safety is always Apple’s top priority, and we have voluntarily decided to exchange every affected power adapter for a new, redesigned adapter, free of charge. We encourage customers to exchange any affected adapter for a new one as soon as possible using the exchange process below.”
