Google Play: 4 charts showing growth in app downloads, revenue, gaming and markets
Google Play, the app store available on smartphones by Samsung and HTC, more than doubled revenue from app downloads driven by the ever-growing popularity of gaming.
Almost 90 per cent of Google Play revenue comes from games typified by the hugely popular Candy Crush Saga and Clash of Clans, up from 80 per cent in the same period last year.
The analysis by App Annie, a platform which provides app market data and analytics to a range of publishers such as Google, Yahoo and Zynga, comes just before Google’s I/O developer conference, due to be held in San Francisco tomorrow.
A freemium model, where initial download of an app is free but additional features within the app are purchased, dominates app revenue generation with a 98 per cent share in comparison to free and paid apps. Freemium apps now make up almost 50 per cent of all Google Play app downloads.
Google Play now carries more than 1.5 million apps, a 60 per cent increase over the last year.
The biggest markets for Google Play underwent a considerable shake-up with Brazil becoming the second largest market outside the US.
However, when it comes to revenue, Japan continues to generate the most of any country in the world.
