Facebook has launched its new function, Reactions, which it describes as "the new Like button with more ways to express yourself" – but there's still no dislike button.

The social network first announced the new Reaction buttons in October 2015, and allowed users in Spain and Ireland to test them out initially. From today, they are available to all Facebook users.

Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook's founder and chief exec, said: "Not every moment you want to share is happy. Sometimes you want to share something sad or frustrating.

"Our community has been asking for a dislike button for years, but not because people want to tell friends they don't like their posts. People wanted to express empathy and make it comfortable to share a wider range of emotions."

Zuckerberg said he had "spent a lot of time thinking about the right way to do this", and added: "Love is the most popular reaction so far, which feels about right to me!"

No word on whether a "cringe" button is on the way…
