FA Cup: Charlton boss: Use knock-out form to drag our club to safety
SHEFFIELD UNITED 2 CHARLTON ATHLETIC 0
CHARLTON manager Chris Powell has urged his players to bounce back from yesterday’s FA Cup quarter-final defeat by dragging themselves out of the Championship relegation zone.
Two goals in three second-half minutes from Sheffield United’s Ryan Flynn and John Brayford ended the Addicks’ Wembley dream. The south London side are bottom of England’s second tier, yet their cup run means they have played four fewer games than rivals Millwall, who lie one place outside the drop zone.
“We’re disappointed with today but we move on. We have a few games in hand and it’s all in our hands,” Powell said. “If we win both of the next week’s games [versus Huddersfield and Millwall] then the table will have a different complexion.”
The deadlock at Bramall Lane was nearly broken around the hour mark yesterday when Callum Harriott got on the end of a Marcus Tudgay cross, yet the Charlton midfielder could only drag his effort wide.
And five minutes later the visitors were made to pay for the miss when former Everton youngster Jose Baxter’s cross was looped in by Flynn.
The lead was doubled soon after when Baxter teed up Brayford whose shot from outside the area caught a deflection and spun in.
