EU in push for joint euro-bonds
The EU does not need a treaty change to issue region-wide euro-bonds, according to the European Commission (EC), but would be best off negotiating one anyway so that the bonds can be underwritten jointly by Eurozone governments. In a discussion paper for release this week, the EC attempts to put the issue of euro-bonds on the agenda for any forthcoming treaty negotiations. The paper suggests that governments could be best off angling for euro-bonds without a joint guarantee because they could be issued quickly and used to push for a commitment to share the underwriting of the bonds during any negotiations, the Wall Street Journal reported.
