DOGGED BROWN VOWS TO FIGHT
PRIME Minister Gordon Brown continued his assault on the City yesterday, promising that “the banks will pay back the British people”.
Speaking at the Labour party conference, Brown told delegates to “dream big dreams” and put behind them the mood of defeatism.
But his fight back will be dealt a major blow this morning, when the Sun newspaper backs the Tories on its front page, declaring “Labour’s Lost It”.
Brown reiterated his pledge to legislate against bumper bonuses and also revealed that the Post Office is to play a greater role in local banking, a policy dreamed up by Lord Mandelson.
But a promise to raise the minimum wage for the next five years met with criticism from CBI deputy director-general John Cridland, who said the plans could undermine the independent Low Pay Commission.
Other policies included 250,000 new, low-carbon jobs and a technology investment fund.
