CITY VIEWS: WOULD YOU WELCOME HIGHER TAXES TO FUND ELDERLY CARE?
JOHN WILD | WILLIS
“No. When the new government came in I thought they should change the way tax money is used in the public sector. I thought that under Labour there was too much bureaucracy. They could take enough in tax to pay for these things if they changed the way it was distributed.”
MARK LEWIS | C LEWIS & CO
“No. I think it’s not sustainable in the long run. The private sector has to take up the slack in the system. I though the Dilnot report came up with some terrible ideas. It’s not easy but, in the situation we are in financially, it’s something the private sector has to handle instead.”
NIGEL MEADE | IMPERIAL COLLEGE
“Yes. There should be a small increase in tax to pay for elderly care. There are people that wouldn’t have the ability to pay for care if there wasn’t enough taken in tax to pay for it. The rich should have to subsidise the poor, within reason.”
