Boris Johnson calls in plans for £1bn Convoys Wharf scheme
LONDON mayor Boris Johnson has taken over control of the planning process for the £1bn regeneration of Convoys Wharf in south east London, after a clash between the developer and the council.
Ambitious plans to regenerate Deptford by building 3,500 homes, a new wharf, a hotel and three new towers were submitted to Lewisham council in May.
However, the developer Hutchison Whampoa wrote to the mayor last month asking him to intervene after falling out with council over architect Sir Terry Farrell’s masterplan.
Planners from the Greater London Authority will now work with Lewisham council before the scheme is brought to the mayor for consideration in February.
“We hope that we will now see progress towards a final determination,” Hutchison said.
The company bought the 48 acre site from Rupert Murdoch’s News International for around £100m in 2005. It was previously used by the media group to import paper.
