ARM says Intel not ready for smartphone challenge
CHIP designer ARM yesterday poured scorn on Intel’s chances of breaking into the smartphone chip market.
ARM president Tudor Brown said he can’t take Intel’s hopes of launching rival chips seriously after so many unsuccessful attempts. He said: “There’s been so many false hopes and so many false marketing boasts, I can’t take it seriously. And even if one exists, I cannot accept Intel’s solution can be as cheap as ARM’s solution.”
Brown also warned ARM’s growth in licensing revenues will be slower next year after an exceptionally strong 2011.
However, he believes the semiconductor industry is set to grow by “a few per cent”, compared with just one per cent this year.
“We’ll probably be having a higher level of licensing than a couple years ago because as ARM grows, our portfolio grows, so we have more available products for licensing.”
