Weak miners and Vodafone weigh on FTSE 100
The leading blue chip index was trading down this morning, dragged down by headline mining shares and Vodafone.
On the FTSE All-Share, Finnish miner Talvivaara sank 8.72 per cent, as its nickel mine remained shut by a waste water leakage.
Electronic card payment provider De La Rue dropped 7.14 per cent as it issued a profit warning due to contract delays.
Eurasian Natural Resources and New World Resources fell 4.5 per cent and 3.8 per cent respectively.
Mining giant Anglo American declined 3.45 per cent, while Avocet Mining dropped three per cent. This morning Anglo American raised the estimated cost of its problematic Minas Rio iron ore project, telling investors it was unlikely to be less than $8bn.
Vodafone was down 3.36 per cent in early deals, as it announced it had taken a £5.9bn write down on its Spanish and Italian operations.
Topping the leader board this morning was telecoms firm TalkTalk, adding 7.13 per cent, which said today it saw a return to revenue growth next year.
Broadcaster ITV rose 5.53 per cent, as it reported increased revenues.
Real estate investment trust Hansteen Holdings added 4.97 per cent in early trading, while medical technology company Optos rose three per cent.
Fellow technology company Oxford Instruments increased 2.15 per cent, as investors reacted positively to its half-year results, which reported that revenue jumped 7.4 per cent over the six months to September.
HSBC was down 0.33 per cent, RBS fell 0.95 per cent and Barclays sank 1.02 per cent. However, Lloyds Banking Group jumped 4.03 per cent in early trading.
In Asia, the Nikkei closed down 0.18 per cent, while in the US the Dow Jones closed down flat.
