Vaughan will be sorely missed, says Trescothick
FORMER opener Marcus Trescothick believes England will miss the experience of Ashes-winning captain Michael Vaughan when Australia visit again this summer.
Vaughan, the former England captain, is expected to announce his retirement at an ECB-convened press conference this morning, thus ending any suggestion of a recall for the forthcoming Ashes series.
Since stepping down as England captain last summer, Vaughan scored just 147 runs in seven innings for Yorkshire and was omitted from the 16-man Ashes training squad.
But Trescothick, who played under Vaughan in that famous 2005 success, believes his former skipper will be sorely missed. “His experience within this year’s Ashes side would have been really important,” the Somerset opener said. “Obviously we worked closely together for a couple of years and had a great time, culminating in us winning the Ashes. To work with him, experience him and talk to him was a key moment for all of us. It was great to have that relationship with him.”
Vaughan, 34, looks set to bow out with a record 18 Test centuries and 5,719 runs in 52 matches for England, and Trescothick is left with fond memories of his former skipper. “He’s a leader of men who has the ability to keep people going,” he added. “People see what he does on the field but they don’t see the off-the-field Michael.”
