US OPEN FINAL DELAYED AGAIN BY THUNDERSTORMS
RAFAEL NADAL moved one step closer to etching his place his history last night – only to be denied once again by the rain.
The world No1 is looking to become only the seventh player in history to hold all four Grand Slam events. But he was made to wait for his chance after rain caused his final with Novak Djokovic to be put back until Monday for a third straight year.
When play did eventually get underway, Nadal took the first set 6-4 against the No3 seed having claimed the crucial break of serve in the sixth game.
Serbian Djokovic, who stunned five-time champion Roger Federer in a thrilling semi-
final, then hit back to break the Spaniard in the fourth game of the second set.
But Nadal broke back in the seventh game before rain stopped play again with the scores locked at 4-4.
