US embassy unrest spreads in Middle East
VIOLENT demonstrators protesting against a low budget film depicting the Prophet Mohammed launched attacks on American consulates in Yemen and Egypt yesterday as chaos spread across the Middle East.
Over a dozen people were injured in Yemen’s capital Sanaa as crowds attacked the US embassy to protest against a movie clip posted on YouTube mocking the Prophet Mohammed. A further 13 people were hurt in the Egyptian capital of Cairo as protestors clashed with Egyptian state forced.
Disturbances were also reported in Bangladesh, Tunisia, Morocco and Sudan.
The wave of protests began on Tuesday, when four diplomats, including US ambassador Christopher Stevens, were killed in an attack which commentators have linked to militants.
As unrest spread throughout the region yesterday, two US warships headed for the Libyan coast in an escalation of tensions in the region.
President Barack Obama has vowed to bring to justice those responsible for the Benghazi attack, which US officials said may have been planned in advance, possibly by an al Qaeda-linked group.
