Treve wins Arc on swansong
TREVE bowed out of racing with a breathtaking final success yesterday in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, becoming the first horse for 36 years to win the celebrated contest in consecutive years.
Only trainer Criquette Head-Maarek fancied the 11-shot’s chances at Longchamp following a difficult year but jockey Thierry Jarnet again piloted the filly to glory, with Flintshire second and Taghrooda third.
Treve was retired immediately after Europe’s richest race, which was last retained in 1978 by Alleged, and will now start a breeding career.
“Today she proved she’s come back to her best,” said Head-Maarek. “Last year I felt she was going to win. This year I was bringing a horse that was not 100 per cent. She is amazing, she is a dream.”
